On trying new food on the trail

I wrote an earlier post about using Indian snacks as backpacking lunch options. I follow that too. My typical backpacking lunch now is 2 bhakri + hummus + 1-2 bars. This time, we had a first time through hiker who joined us. Unfortunately, he had taken my recommendation a bit to the extreme :(. He ate a full pack of Bhakri (7, at 170 calories each) and a full pack of hummus for lunch.

It did not go well. This was the first time he had consumed these many Bhakris in one sitting. He fell ill on the trail and had to exit at Tuolumne meadows.

It must be obvious, if not, please remember this:

Please do not try new food on the trail (new anything, if you can help it). Test and try it under better circumstances.

To the hiker who learned it the hard way - I am sorry. I should have added a disclaimer.
